Abstract: A chiral resolving reagent n-octyl D-tartrate was prepared from D-tartaric acid and n-octanol using p-toluene sulfonic acid and toluene as a catalyst and a solvent. The structure was confirmed by IR. The effect of molar ratio of reactants, amount of solvent and catalyst and stir speed on the yield were discussed by orthogonal test. The optimum reaction conditions were as follows: the molar ratio of D-tartaric acid and n-octanol at 1.0 ∶2.8, p-toluene sulfonic acid at 0.5 g, toluene at 55 mL and stirring at slow speed. Under the optimum condition the yield of n-octyl D-tartrate was about 90% and the esterification rate was over 98%.
