Abstract:Objective:To investigate the mechanism of the prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy by tetromethylpragine.Methods:Diabetic rats were induced by streptozocin(STZ) and divided into 2 groups,e...Objective:To investigate the mechanism of the prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy by tetromethylpragine.Methods:Diabetic rats were induced by streptozocin(STZ) and divided into 2 groups,each group 20 rats,one group without treatment;the other group treated with tetromethylpragine, and 20 normal rats used as control group.At the 4 th week and 12 th week,body weight,blood sugar,retina SOD activity and MDA content were examined.After 12 weeks,the rats were killed and the retina were observed with transmission electron microscope.Results:Blood sugar of the normal control group and the diabetic group treated with tetromethylpragine is lower and the SOD content is higher than the diabetic group without treatment.Obvious changes of retinal ultrastructure were observed between the rats in diabetic group treated with tetromethylpragine and those without treatment.Conclusion:Tetromethylpragine can decrease the blood sugar,increase the SOD activity of the RD rats′ retina,thus decrease the production of the MDA and reduce the ultrastructural pathology of retina tissue.It implies that tetromethylpragine may prevent the development of the diabetic retinopathy,and may be useful in its treatment.Read More
