Abstract: Modernity is the core issue of the sociology study. In nowadays west society thought field, English sociologist Anthony Giddens's modernity thought is focused attention upon by many people for its profound analyze, integrated system and original points of view. In this paper, the author introduces Giddens's academic life and the learning clue of his sociological theory, summarizes the meanings of modernity and introduces his “discontinuous view of modern history and the theory about “four institutional dimensitions of modernity. Upon this foundation, the author puts Giddens's modernity thought in the background of the modern sociological theory, appraises and compares with some important theories which studying modern society such as Lyotard's post-modernity thought, Frankfurt school's society criticism theory and Daniel Bell's post-industrial social theory. In addition, the author summarizes some characters of Giddens's modernity thought by combining it with the contestation about “modernity between Habermas and Lyotard, so definitudes the different study emphasizing points of these theories and their analyzing frames.
