Title: Treatment of upper-facial wrinkles with botulinum toxin type A in 1000 cases
Abstract: Objective For treatment of winkling in the upper face caused by actions of facial muscles, we injected botulinum toxin type-A into facial muscles leading to its temporary paralysis and weakness. This can produce a significant improvement of wrinkling in face. One thousand patients were injected with BOTOX since 1996. 235 in the corrugator superciliaris, 380 in the orbicularis oculi, 350 in the frontalis muscle and 35 in the dorsum of nose. Methods Dilution was obtained by adding 1.5ml normal saline to 55 IU of BOTOX. The dose used varied according to individial patient. Results The paralysis obtained in the facial muscles was effective lasting for 3~6 months. Neither local nor general adverse effects were noted, except ptosis in 1 patient, edema and ecchymosis in 3 patients. The improvement obtained in facial wrinkles was satisfactory both to the patient and to us. Conclusion BOTOX is a safe, easy-to-use, effective modality for the temporary elimination of hyperfunctioning upper-facial muscles.
