Title: Effects of Levocarnitine on Nutrition and Oxidative Stress Status in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients
Abstract: Objective To investigate the effects of levocarnitine on nutrition and oxidative stress status in maintenance hemodialysis(MHD) patients. Methods Forty-two MHD patients were selected, who had undergone hemodialysis for at least three months before the study and were in a stable clinic status. One gram of 1evocarnitine was infused to the patients at the end of each dialysis treatment for three months. The parameters of nutrition and oxidative stress were evaluated. Results Treatment with levocarnitine for three months, the average serum levels of albumin(P0.05) and hemoglobin(P0.01) were elevated significantly. The average plasma levels of malondialdehyde(MDA) was significantly lower than those of baseline(P0.01),however,the average plasma level of glutathione peroxidase(GSHPx) and superoxide dismutase(SOD) were elevated markedly(P0.01).Difference was not significant between serum lipid parameters before and after the treatment. Conclusion Intravenous supplement with levocarnitine in MHD patients appears to be associated with an improvement of nutrition and oxidative stress status.
