Title: Expression and clinical significance of erythropoietin and erythropoietin receptor in rectal cancer
Abstract: Objective To investigate the expression of erythropoietin and erythropoietin receptor in rectal cancer and analyze its clinical significance. Methods Immunohistochemistry technique was used to detect the expressions of erythropoietin and erythropoietin receptor in 60 cases of rectal cancer and 60 cases of normal rectal tissues.Results(1) The expression rates of erythropoietin and erythropoietin receptor were 0 in normal rectal tissues and 65.0% and 80.0% in rectal cancer tissues respectively, which showed significant differences between two groups(P0.05).(2)The high expression rates of erythropoietin and erythropoietin receptor were 40.6% and 65.6% in highly and moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma, and were 92.8% and 96.4% in poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma and undifferentiated carcinoma respectively, which showed significant differences between two groups(P0.05).The high expression rates of erythropoietin and erythropoietin receptor was 35.7% and 64.3% in Dukes stage A and B,and 90.6% and 93.8% in stage C respectively, which showed significant differences(P0.05).(3)The correlation analysis of erythropoietin and erythropoietin receptor expression in rectal cancer showed that erythropoietin and was positively correlated with erythropoietin receptor(r=0.419,P=0.004).Conclusion The expression levels of erythropoietin and erythropoietin receptor of rectal cancer tissues are correlated with the poor prognosis.Erythropoietin and erythropoietin receptor can regulate the progression, invasion and metastasis of rectal cancer together.
