Title: Columnar cell variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma: a clinicopathologic analystis
Abstract: Objective To explore the clinicopathological features and diagnosis of columnar cell variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma( CCV-PTC). Methods By using histological and immunohistochemical technique, the clinicopathological data were analyzed in one case of CCV-PTC. Results A female patient of 54 years old, with a giant tumor located in the right neck for 25 years. Tumor had thick capsule. Microscopically, the distinctive feature was its columnar cells and prominent nuclear pseudostratification. The cells were arranged in papillary, follicular, trabecular, cribriform, complex glandular, and / or solid architectural patterns. The immunohistochemistry of the columnar cells showed high expression of TTF1 and P16,while no expression of CK19,ER,PR,CDX2,villin and HMBE-1. In particular, locally expressed TG,cyclin D1 and P53 were noted. Conclusions CCV-PTC is a rare subtype of PTC with a more aggressive biological behavior. The diagnosis can be made by combined evaluation of clinical characterstics, histological and immunohistochemical features.
