Title: A Quantitative Study of Chinese Character Formation Principles in Context of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language
Abstract: Teaching Chinese characters requires both qualitative and quantitative research methods for the formation principles. The data in this study involves 1781 of the 2098 phonogramic characters listed in the Compulsory Characters for Mandarin Proficiency Levels and Character Frequency Lists, and the related 51 radicals with each being used in at least 10 characters. The quantitative analysis of the data has shown high relevance between a character's meaning and structure or between its meaning and sound,as represented by a relevance index of nearly 0.8.This special feature of Chinese language should be well used in teaching Chinese characters;otherwise,it will be a waste of teaching resources.
