Title: Orthognathic Surgery and Postsurgical Orthodontics for Correction of Secondary Dentofacial Deformities in Cleft Lip and Palate Patients
Abstract: Objective To investigate an effective method of orthognathic surgery and postsurgical orthodontics for correction of secondary dentofacial deformities in cleft lip and palate patients.Methods From January 2002 to August 2010,25 cleft patients suffering from secondary dentofacial deformities were treated.There were 11 males and 14 females,aged from 16 to 33 years(mean age: 22 years),19 patients were unilateral cleft and 6 were bilateral cleft.All patients had not received presurgical orthodontics and were treated by orthognathic surgery accompanied with postsurgical orthodontics for deformities correction.Results All 25 patients were satisfied with their appearances and dental articulation after operation.All patients got the normal occlusion and the satisfactory intermaxillary relationship with orthodontics treatment of 3-12 months.After a follow up of 6 months to 3 years,the results of the treatment were stable.Conclusion The orthognathic surgery and postsurgical orthodontics is efficient for correction of secondary dentofacial deformities in cleft patients.
