Title: The white matter and grey matter in the first episodic schizophrenia: a diffusion tensor imaging study
Abstract: Objective This study was to measure white matter and grey matter in some brain regions of neuroleptics-free patients with first episodic schizophrenia using the diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging(DTI).Methods DTI was performen in a sample of 9 first episode schizophrenic patients and 9 gender-,age-,and education-matched controls.Regions of interest were placed in the relay of temporal and frontal lobe, internal capsule, hippocampus, precentral gyrus, and postcentral gyrus, and fractional anisotropy(FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC) were measured.Z-test was used to test group differences, with group as between-subjects factor and side as within-subjects factor. Results (1) No differences of FA and ADC in ROIs between left and right sides were found in both patients and controls((P0.05).)(2) There were no differences of FA in the ROIs between patients and controls(P0.05),while the ADR in the middle temporal lobe, precentral gyrus and postcentral gyrus were significantly higher in patients than in controls(P0.05).(3) There were no differences in the hippocampus volume between both the groups(P0.05).Conclusions No difference of DTI parameters are found between the first episode schizophrenic patients and healthy controls in this study.
