Title: Expression of VEGF-C mRNA in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and its clinical significance
Abstract: AIM:To investigate the mRNA expression of vascular endothelial growth factor C(VEGF-C) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC) and its clinical significance.METHODS: The mRNA expression of VEGF-C in tumor tissues and non-tumor tissues from 39 ESCC patients in our hospital from March 2009 to February 2010 were detected by the method of in situ hybridization(ISH) and followed up.RESULTS: Positive ISH for VEGF-C mRNA was observed in 28 cases of tumor tissues and 5 cases of non-tumor tissues. The difference had statistical significance(P 0.05).The mRNA expression of VEGF-C in ESCC was significantly associated with lymph node metastasis and depth of infiltration, and was not significantly associated with age, sex, and pathological grade. The patients were followed up until death or February 29,2012,whichever came first. The survival rate significantly decreased when the mRNA expression of VEGF-C was positive(P 0.05).CONCLUSION: The mRNA expression of VEGF-C is closely related to lymph node metastasis, tumor progression and prognosis in ESCC.
