Abstract: The paper discusses computer simulation of system operations. Computer programs that simulate operations through future time periods on hourly, daily or monthly time periods are routinely used to guide operations in achieving objectives and assessing the effects of various scenarios. Major physical elements needed to describe reservoir, river, power, and other functions are modeled tying the system of reservoirs together so that their simulated performance can be assessed, both individually and as a system. The development and adaptation of general applications programs and site specific programs used in modeling large hydro systems (Columbia River, Missouri River, and Central Valley Project hydro systems) are reviewed. The additional needs and potential improvements of models used in large hydro system operations from an operations manager's view are discussed.
