Title: Metabolism of glucose-1-C14 and glucose-6-C14 by liver slices of refed rats
Abstract: Rats starved for 48 hours and refed a high carbohydrate diet show an increase in hepatic lipogenesis and a marked increase in activity of the enzymes of entry into the HMP shunt. An analysis is given of the patterns of glucose-1-C 14 and -6-C 14 metabolism in liver slices of refed rats. At 24 and 48 hours the ratios of carbons 1 and 6 in both CO 2 and lipid are consistent with an increase in glucose metabolism via the direct pathway, especially in view of the previous finding of elevated HMP dehydrogenase activity under these conditions. In addition, a description is given of the temporal relationships of glycogen deposition, lipogenesis recovery, and differentially labeled glucose metabolism in the first 12 hours of refeeding.
