Despite considerable ...Counterproductive work behavior (CWB) reflects behaviors (e.g., withdrawal, theft, interpersonal aggression) that are harmful to organizations and the employees who work in them. Despite considerable research interest in CWB, we know very little about the motives employees have for engaging in these behaviors. The papers in this symposium examine three different motives for CWB: to cope with stressors, to achieve goals, and to express frustration. Together, they point to key factors influencing engagement in CWB for these purposes, including control, achievement goals, the experience of CWB as rewarding, and conflict.
