Title: Two-dimensional stress wave calculations of kinetic energy projectile impact on multi-layered targets
Abstract: The oblique impact of a cylindrical projectile onto a spaced armor target is approximated using two-dimensional elastic-plastic Eulerian and Lagrangian stress wave propagation computer programs. Penetration of the first two armor layers by a tungsten alloy projectile is calculated for a number of different conditions to indicate the effects of varying the armor and projectile yield stress, interface friction and the iron ..cap alpha.. reversible epsilon phase change. Results are summarized by examining changes in projectile residual velocity, projectile rotation and final projectile shape. Calculations with a constant target areal density are also included for a depleted uranium projectile to illustrate the effects of realistic changes in target impedance and strength.
