Yet the relative effectiveness of open innovation strategies on product innovativeness has not been investigated. Viewing new product innovativeness as the outcome of knowledge creation and transfer process, this study offers and tests a set of hypotheses to determine the relative impacts of different open innovation strategies on new product innovativeness. Specifically, it investigates the relative impacts of strategies based on the type of external organization involved (supply chain or non-supply chain) and the type of arrangement for using the external source (pure acquisition or “Buy” and collaboration or “Ally”). It then investigates the moderating role of internal research and development (R&D) intensity on the relationships between open innovation strategies and new product innovativeness. Structural Equation Modeling is used to test the hypotheses based on survey responses about 272 projects in the United States. Results confirm that in terms of improving product innovativeness, “Buy” strategy is more effective than “Ally” and working with non-supply chain organizations is more effective than working with supply chain organizations.Read More
