Abstract: <titre>Résumé</titre>«Mille bombes, il y a cinq ans que j’entends brailler sur les colonies. Et puis quoi ? Que du bruit, et du tapage ! » Ainsi s’exprime un caporal, porte-parole de la rue dans un pamphlet publié en 1795. Et il est vrai, comme le montre cette bibliographie riche de 600 références, que les colonies furent au centre de bien des discussions et controverses.Les documents contemporains des événements sont regroupés dans la première partie, et classés par époque (Révolution, Consulat, Empire), puis par nom d’auteur. Tout au long des années révolutionnaires, les débats sont vifs sur les colonies, les réclamations des gens de couleur, le sort des noirs, la représentativité aux États généraux et aux élections ou encore l’importance du commerce avec les îles. Ces débats engendrent un grand nombre de publications sous forme de discours ou de réflexions émanant des membres des différentes assemblées, des colons et des affranchis. Cette effervescence idéologique marque le pas dans les cinq dernières années du siècle, pour laisser la première place aux comptes-rendus ou rapports sur la situation à Saint-Domingue. Les « troubles », « l’Affaire de Saint-Domingue », la plus riche des colonies, accaparent toute l’attention.Les publications sur les colonies se font plus rares au temps du Consulat et émanent presque exclusivement de colons, qui réclament l’ordre et la tranquillité pour les bienfaits du commerce, et le maintien de l’esclavageLes libelles édités au Premier Empire, puis à la Restauration montrent résignation et amertume face à la perte de la plus belle des colonies, Saint-Domingue devenue Haïti. Bon nombre des publications émanent des colons qui réclament des d’indemnités.Les ouvrages et les articles modernes, qui constituent la seconde partie, sont classés par thème, puis par nom d’auteur.La lutte contre l’esclavage est le fil conducteur de la majorité des livres publiés sur l’histoire des colonies à la Révolution et à l’Empire. Les opinions publiques sont restituées grâce aux extraits de lettres et journaux des acteurs et témoins contemporains. Parmi ces personnalités, celle de Toussaint Louverture se détache et fait l’objet de nombreuses biographies. De même, parmi les colonies, l’histoire d’Haïti reste la plus étudiée.
