Its continued growth has been accompanied by charges of “populism” and “racism.” Political scientists classify its success as the result of a “protest vote” — a raw manifestation of political discontent not unlike the support extended to the pensioners' party, the Greens and others. But the Lombard League is not reducible to this, or to a feverish surge of localism. Neither is it the result of the supposed unpopularity of the Christian Democrats after too long a “reign.” It can only be understood in terms of Italian history and above all the relation between state and society, which is rapidly breaking down.Read More
