The teachers have availed themselves of this data as best they could but much of the great mass of material has been unsuited to immediate adoption for the classroom. In the field of German, in particular, we have had many attempts to lay down certain minima for the twoyear high school course. In a way, our New York State Syllabus in Modern Languages has taken cognizance of these researches and has called the attention of its teachers to them, but much more could be done in the way of incorporating the usable objective data and investigating further in this field. There are many teachers who feel that now or never is the time to strike, if we wish German to regain at least one-half of its former position as compared to other foreign languages. Without doubt the Goethe Year offers a most opportune moment for the appearance of many new factors in the field of German.
