Abstract: Cet ouvrage entend ouvrir la voie à un sujet peu abordé, l'histoire de la transgression considérée à travers l'iconographie des manuscrits médiévaux.On le sait, un grand nombre de ces manuscrits contiennent des images troublantes pour le moderne, surtout dans les marges.Comment un manuscrit transcrivant un texte religieux, moral peut-il intégrer des représentations sexuelles ou scatologiques ?Les auteurs entendent ici répondre à ce type de question, avec une approche novatrice qui en partie repose sur la distinction entre la transgression et le transgressif, en montrant que ce qu'un moderne considère le plus souvent comme une transgression ne l'est pas, mais s'intègre bien dans un système normatif médiéval, reposant sur la démonstration et sur des procédés de montage que les auteurs entendent mettre en lumière et analyser, en s'autorisant des aller-retours entre le Moyen Âge et notre époque contemporaine ; pour ce faire, les auteurs partent du postulat que les réactions de notre époque aux images sont le fruit d'une histoire du regard, histoire fortement conditionnée par le rapport des images au sacré, au religieux, au moral, le Moyen Âge latin, période privilégiée d'étude des phénomènes liés à l'iconographie et au regard, offrant et les fondements de cette histoire et les bases de la réflexion proposée.En Occident en effet, l'attitude modérée de l'Église à l'égard des images, naviguant entre interdiction et culte, a favorisé la construction de cette histoire.
