Title: FORMATION OF Zr$sup 97$Cl$sub 4$ BY THE SLOWING-DOWN OF THE FISSION FRAGMENTS IN GAS MIXTURES CONTAINING CHLORINE
Abstract: Use of gaseous compounds for increasing the rate of radiochemical decomposition is especially effective when the compounds may be prepared by slowing down the recoil atoms in the gas phase and removing them afterwards from the gas stream. For this reason, the conditions of the formation of Zr/sup 97/ from fission fragments, in the gas phase in the form of ZrCl/sub 4/, were investigated. The experiments were carried out with a target consisting of a U/ sub 3/O/sub 8/ layer on a mica support in fluorothene plastic, irradiated by neutrons from a Po--Be source; the plastic allowed a large portion of the fission fragments to pass. Analysis of the gas stream indicated that at temperatures>17O deg C the Zr/sup 97/ is obtained in the form of its tetrachloride; Zr/sup 97/Cl/ sub 4/ was obtained even when the gas mixture contained considerable amounts of O. The yield was about 75%. The compound was formed from both primary Zr/sup 97/ fragments and from Zr/sup 97/ originating from the BETA -decay of Y/sup 97/. The condensate was slightly contaminated with an as yet undetermined nuclide with a T/sub 1/2/ = 20 min. The purification coefficient with respect to other fission fragments was foundmore » to be about 300. (TTT)« less
