Title: Morphological and biochemical traits of resistance in chilli against thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis
Abstract: Field screening of 407 accessions of chilli was carried out to identify sources of resistance to thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood. In the preliminary field screening conducted during Kharif 2010, summer 2011 and Kharif 2011, nine accessions were found to be resistant to the pest and the advanced field trials were conducted on the promising accessions to identify the morphological and biochemical traits of resistance in chilli germplasm against the thrips. The total phenol content in leaf was found to be positively correlated while the trichome density in leaf was not associated with the resistant traits against S. dorsalis. Based on the observation on per cent leaf curl index, thrips population and total phenol content in leaf, the accessions IC572481, EC596952, EC391082, EC378688, EC599959, IC275993, IC570388 and IC572504 were identified as the resistant sources against the thrips, S. dorsalis in chilli.
