Title: Cloning and Sequencing of the Clostridium pasteurianum Genes Encoding Molybdenum-Pterin-Binding Proteins
Abstract: The importance of molybdenum (Mo) first became apparent at the molecular level when the two proteins required for nitrogen-fixing activity were isolated (Bulen and LeComte, 1966), and subsequently, one of the nitrogenase proteins was shown to contain molybdenum and iron (MoFe protein). One of the established metabolic functions of Mo is a component of two distinct “cofactors” of various redox enzymes. The MoFe cofactor is unique to the nitrogenase system, and the Mo cofactor, a Mo-pterin complex, is common to all other known Mo enzymes. What is not known is the biosynthetic pathway for either Mo cofactor or the process by which Mo metabolism and apoenzyme biosynthesis conjoin.
