Title: Efficacy of Herbicides for Weed Control and Nitrogen Fertilization in Potato1
Abstract: Field experiments were conducted in the winter season of 1977 and 1978 in entisols of Meerut district (U.P.). In the first study, two herbicides in combination with four nitrogen levels were tried in potato, Khufri Sindhuri variety. In second study, 12 herbicides were tested. Alachior 1.25 kg./ha and fluchloralin 1.20 kg/ha were effective in controlling weeds. The tuber yield was highest at 180 kg N/ha at which level the alachior performed the best. At 60 and 120 kg N/ha, cultural treatment (weeding + earthing) was better than alachior. In the second study weed-free and herbicide treatments were alike in yield. In both trials, the manual treatment (weeding+earthing) gave the highest yield, but it was on par with some herbicides. The herbieides alachior (1.25 kg/ha), linuron (0.5 kg/ha), metribuzin (0.375 kg/ha), fluchloralin (1.20 kg/ha), meihabenzthiazuron (1.4 kg/ha) and terbutryne (1.2 kg/ha) were found promising in controlling weeds in potato.
