Title: A Semantic Approach to the Teaching of English Grammar to EFL Learners: A Sample of a Course Design
Abstract: Teaching grammar has been central to and often synonymous with teaching foreign language for the past 2500 years (Rutherford, 1987). However, with the advent of communicative language teaching, the necessity of grammar instruction has become a debating challenge. The question of when, how and, to what extent, a teacher should teach grammar to language learners is a controversial issue. This paper argues that it is necessary to integrate grammar instruction with the content-based communicative language teaching, taking the semantic way, even if the fact that the majority of cadets' language proficiency level is slightly low and their learning needs is predominantly to develop their survival as well as vocational communication. To release teachers' perplexity and bewilderment of when and how to conduct a grammar lesson, this paper further proposes a decision-making guidelines for teachers' reference based on learners' and instructional variables. A sample course material to present a grammatical feature is finally suggested at the end of this paper.
