Abstract: Some developers of mobile teleoperators for remote systems have been emphasizing telepresence as an important design consideration. This paper discusses what that term means and what it implies for human/machine interfaces from a human factors viewpoint. In general, telepresence means designing a control station's equipment so an operator has a sense of presence at the remote manipulator or vehicle being controlled.
