Title: Entre la utilidad pública, la beneficencia y el debate: la limosna en Orizaba, 1700-1834
Abstract: Poco tratada en la historiografía mexicanista, la historia de la limosna nos ilustra sobre los cambios en la cultura religiosa y política de finales del siglo XVIII y principios del siglo XIX. Tradicionalmente, la limosna servía lo mismo para la construcción de templos, para pagar el culto y ornato de las imágenes religiosas, para sostener al clero y para financiar la caridad. Por todo ello, entraba en el concepto de “utilidad pública”, es decir, la de una comunidad en concreto. En las fronteras entre sagrado y profano, la colecta de limosnas era realizada en múltiples lugares y tanto por corporaciones religiosas como civiles, bajo la tutela del rey. En las primeras décadas del siglo XIX, su utilidad fue puesta en cuestión por la opinión pública, y se le vio incluso como rival de la recaudación estatal, pero sobre todo se vio desplazada por la beneficencia organizada por las nuevas instituciones municipales.
