Abstract: Beliefs about the wood demon have along attracted the attention of Russian scholars. As early as the end of the eighteenth and very beginning of the nineteenth centuries, the authors of works devoted to the mythology of the Slavs not only cited the wood demon as one of the most prevalent images in "ancient fables" but also pointed to the fact that notions about this Slavic demonological being were similar to mythological images of other peoples, particularly the satyrs of antiquity.
