Abstract: The successful deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is one of the essential elements required to assist in achieving the national objective of operating and managing surface transportation systems more efficiently and safely. However, to meet those objectives it is critical that an adequately trained workforce be in place, having the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies to do so. The U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) through the ITS Joint Program Office and with numerous partners, launched a national education and training program in 1996. It is designed to begin to deal with the need to train the existing workforce in the application of information technology, advanced sensors, computer systems, and other technologies required to more efficiently operate surface transportation systems. U.S. DOT is also working with the nation's universities to develop new courses and programs to educate future professionals to meet the challenges of the next century. The purpose of this paper is to review the status of the current program and to propose targeted recommendations for meeting training and education needs to prepare transportation professional to meet the challenges of the future. The recommendations are data driven, based upon the results of interviews with about 200 transportation practitioners conducted during the summer of 1998. They compliment and expand upon the recommendations derived from a number of related research and conference reports developed over the past several years.
