Abstract: Standards of transit service should take into account customer desires, technical capability, land use and land planning, present and future requirements of society, the implications of historical freedom of choice, and economics. Questions relating to service standards are discussed. These questions concern the need for bus transportation, the criteria for good service, and the manner in which an adequate level of service may be achieved. The criteria of past standards are outlined. These relate to the concern with operating costs, the revision and consolidation of routes, high patronage locations, minimum investment, and passenger comfort and safety. Changes in criteria for standards come about with technological advancement, a changing society, a critical need and economics. Technological advances in communication necessitated change in criteria and design of bus service to take advantage of current capability. The development of the suburban complex, the need for an alternative mode of transportation, and the need for conservation of resources have promoted the change of criteria for standards of transit operation.
