Title: Studies concerning a radioimmunoassay for oxytocin
Abstract: The relationship of endogenous oxytocin to normal labor or to certain abnormalities of parturition is not clear, due in part to the lack of a specific, sensitive, and reproducible assay for oxytocin. Radioimmunoassay has proved useful in the evaluation of several peptide hormones. The following report describes preliminary studies which are necessary for the eventual application of radioimmunoassay to the measurement of plasma oxytocin. These studies include radioiodination of oxytocin, assessment of labeled oxytocin and oxytocin antiserum, extraction and concentration of plasma, standard curves for oxytocin in buffer and plasma, and recovery of oxytocin added to normal and late pregnancy plasma.
