Abstract: Am 20. Dezember 1946 wurde Christian Stock, der in Darmstadt geborene uneheliche Sohn der Haushälterin Maria Magdalena Reß, zum ersten demokratisch legitimierten Ministerpräsidenten von Hessen gewählt.1 Die ärmlichen Verhältnisse der Kindheit und Jugend prägten seinen weiteren Lebensweg. Eine höhere Schulbildung war ihm aufgrund dieser Umstände verwehrt worden. Über eine Zigarrenmacherlehre und anschließende Arbeit im erlernten Beruf kam er zur Gewerkschaft und der SPD. Nach seiner Tätigkeit als Arbeitersekretär wurde er 1922 Direktor der AOK in Heidelberg und 10 Jahre später in Frankfurt am Main.
