Title: The problem of nationalism and race: Australia and Japan in World War I and World War II
Abstract: This lecture reflects on one of the major themes which informed my two latest works, Towards a New Vision: Australia and Japan across Time and Australia and World Crisis, 1914-1923, namely the rise of nationalism and its effects on Australia and Japan. This form of social identity dominated Australia and Japan, as it dominated the rest of the modernising world, from the end of the nineteenth century to the end of World War II, and in this brief talk I will attempt to examine the distinctive character that nationalism assumed in these two countries and the consequences for each country.
