Title: The Samurai Who Came to the World's Biggest Barbecue: Australia, Japan & Globalisation
Abstract: This article makes a cross-cultural, historical comparison of globalisation in post-war Japan and Australia. It places the comparison in the context of arguments about modernisation and development, and highlights how arguments about media effects and mass culture were treated in both countries as part of an ongoing debate about 'Americanisation'. It is argued that Japan developed an assertive 'information society' approach to communication research, whereas Australian positions were more defensive and pro-nationalist.
