Title: Modern Methods for Automating Finite Element Mesh Generation
Abstract: The collection of finite elements composing the finite element model is the finite element mesh. The five papers in this book describe computer aided methods for generating finite elements for design analysis. Modern methods and recent advances in automatic finite element mesh generation are reviewed. A system to generate finite element models directly from the solids model database is proposed. One paper presents an algorithm that examines the traces of joints on an excavation face in order to generate a mesh that corresponds to the corners and faces of removable blocks. The development of three different mesh generation approaches, their applications, and their strengths and weaknesses are reviewed. Research needs in finite element mesh generation are discussed. These papers were presented at the session, Modern Methods for Automating Finite Element Mesh Generation, at the ASCE National Convention in Boston, October 31, 1986.
