Abstract: Ireland is situated in the North West of Europe. It comprises the Republic and Northern Ireland which is part of the United Kingdom. Both parts of the island have separate health systems. Population The population is now 4.6 million, an increase of 8% since 2006. The population has become very diverse. The number of people living in Ireland but born outside the state increased by 30% between 2006 and 2011. This now represents 12% of the population. 34% of the population is under 25 years of age and 12% of the population is over 65 years of age. The number of people over the age of 65 years is projected to more than double over the next 30 years with the greatest proportional increases occurring in the 85+ age group. (1)
