Abstract: There are about 60 million people of at least 65 years within the EU area, which equals 15 % of the total population. By the year 2030 the number will be around 90 million. Especially the number of people over 80 years of age will rise. In table 1 the total population for all European countries in 1999 is shown. Also the part aged 15 years and younger and the part aged 65 years and older is shown. Especially the latter age category is relevant for this project.
