Title: Kinetics of Gas Phase Oxygen Control System and Oxygen Concentration Measurement in Liquid Pb and LBE
Abstract: Liquid lead (Pb) and lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) are very corrosive to the structural materials at high temperature. This corrosion problem can be prevented by the formation of a protective oxide layer on the surface of a steel by an active control of the oxygen concentration. In recent studies, the necessity of control and measurement of the oxygen concentration in the liquid metal in order to safely operate a liquid Pb and LBE system has been shown. The dynamic behaviour of the gas phase oxygen control system (OCS) is inves- tigated with the theoretical equations describing the thermodynamic and kinetic behaviour of such a system. For a measurement of the oxygen concentration in a liquid LBE, we chose the Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) oxygen sensor with a Bi/Bi2O3 reference electrode, and calibration tests in a liquid LBE were performed. The oxygen concentration dissolved in liquid LBE can be determined by the electromagnetic force (EMF) of the YSZ oxygen sensor caused by the oxygen concentration difference across a solid electrolyte.
