Title: Quality and storability of apples of some cultivars from organic orchard.
Abstract: Summary The study was conducted in the years 2011-2013 in a certified organic orchard belonging to Research In stitute of Horticulture in Skierniewice on 7 scab resistant apple cult ivars (‘Free Redstar’, ‘Melfree’, ‘Rajka’, ‘Enterpr ise’, ‘Rewena’, ‘Rubinola’ and ‘Topaz`) and 3 low susceptible cvs. (‘Del bard Jubile’, ‘Ligolina’ and ‘Pinova’). A main goal of the study was to assess quality and storability of apples from organ ic orchard. It was found that the quality character istics of apples depend largely on the genetic background of the variety. D ifferences between studied cultivars concerned quan tity and intensity of skin color. Among them 'Free Redstar', 'Enterprise' and 'Rajka' belong to the group of dark-skinned on es. Under organic orchard conditions the highest weight of 100 fruits was obtained in case of ‘Melfree’, ‘Rajka’, ‘Enter prise’ and 'Delbard Jubile', while 'Rubinola', 'Rajka' and ‘Pinova’ pro duced the smallest apples. Due to the high acidity of apples, all studied cultivars are suitable both for the fresh market an d processing. Study have shown that using the limit ed protection program against fungal diseases the smallest number of symp toms of apple scab was observed on ‘Pinova’ and ‘Li golina’ fruits as well as on scab resistant cultivars. Apples of most cultivars were kept in cold storage for four month s. Extending that period led to decreasing flesh firmness and increasing phy siological disorders. The period of keeping organic apples in common cold storage was limited by storage diseases, mostl y bull’s eye rot (Pezicula sp.). ‘Pinova’ and ‘Topa z’ cvs. were the most susceptible to the disease.
