Title: Deutsche Zeitgeschichte von 1945 bis 2000. Gesellschaft--Staat--Politik. Ein Handbuch
Abstract: This is a masterful survey of contemporary German political history comprising both the history of the FRG and of the GDR in equal measure. It starts off with two survey articles: a 140-page opener by Jörg Roesler which summarizes the main lines of development of the two German states between 1945 and 1990, and a much shorter 20 page coda on the reunified Germany penned by Johannes L. Kuppe. These broad introductions are followed by a series of articles which introduce the reader to the key areas of social development in the three Germanies under discussion here. Highly informative articles on Germany in international politics (Siegfried Schwarz) and the political and legal systems of the Germanies (Wilfriede Otto; Volkmar Schöneburg) are followed by chapters dealing with opposition and resistance (Bernd Florath), art and culture (Jean Mortier), the media (Gerald Diesener) and the economy and sciences (Hubert Laitko). Two articles on the perception of the two Germanies in Western and Eastern Europe (Ulrich Pfeil; Erhard Crome) deserve particular praise as they break up the internal national perspective of this kind of political national history. The final and longest section of articles comprise detailed descriptions of specific policy areas, including foreign policy (Ingrid Muth and Benno-Eide Siebs), German–German policy (Michael Lemke and Detlef Nakath), defence and military policy (Lothar Schröter and Joachim Schunke), policing (Herbert Reinke), economic policy (Siegfried Kupper), trade policy (Doris Cornelsen), agrarian policy (Christel Nehrig), labour policy and trade unionism (Stefan Paul Werum), health and social policy (Marcel Boldorf), women and family policy (Katrin Schäfgen), youth policy (Karla Popp), education policy (Gert Geiβler), science policy (Reinhard Mocek and Clemens Burrichter), cultural policy (Gerd Dietrich), sport policy (Klaus Weise), housing policy (Joachim Tesch), infrastructure and traffic policy (Burghard Ciesla), environmental policy (Jochen Weichold), churches and religion (Host Dähn and Joachim Heise), expellees in the two Germanies (Alexander von Plato), foreigners (Stefan Keβler) and German–German migrations (Jörg Roesler).
