Its name is derived from a hero of Nguni l...G azaland occupies the eastern flank of the expansive Sabi Valley, and stretches from the eastern border of Rhodesia, across Mozambique, to the Indian Ocean. Its name is derived from a hero of Nguni legend who is said to have traveled to this region and returned to his people with exciting tales about the sweet waters and fertile lands of Msapa. It was perhaps partly these stories that led the runaway commander of Chaka, Soshangaana, to choose this area for his new home. Whatever the historical truth of the legend, the effects of Nguni influence among the Ndau, who today live in Gazaland and whom the Nguni ruled from about 1830 to 1900, is most evident in the Nguni name for their country, which the Ndau adopted with pride, and in the Nguni name Shangana by which the other peoples in Rhodesia call the Ndau.
