Title: Direct staining on vinyl plastic tape, demonstration of the cutaneous flora of the epidermis by the strip method
Abstract: The bacteria and fungi of the horny layer of the skin can be stained directly on Scotch brand tapes (#681 and #473) by ordinary histologic techniques. Methods are given for PAS, Gram, and Giemsa staining for light microscopy and for an acridine orange stain for fluorescent microscopy. Many other staining methods may be used. Additional uses are described, such as the examination of infected hairs, making of cultures from material collected on the tape, and a rapid staining method for immediate diagnosis.
