Abstract: The flora of the skin shows qualitative and quantitative variations in different areas of the body and under differing conditions. Certain organisms are always present; others, including skin and soft-tissue pathogens, are transient. The normal flora may, on occasion, cause bothersome infections. The normal flora may offer protection against the more harmful species in ways that are yet to be defined.
