Abstract: In Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance, Mabel's father is described in a famous patter song as “The very model of a modern major-general”. A similar type of description could well be applied to the report by Sabine Bahn and colleagues in today's Lancet: it is “the very model of a modern medical investigation”. Neuronal target genes of the neuron-restrictive silencer factor in neurospheres derived from fetuses with Down's syndrome: a gene expression studyOur findings suggest a link between dysregulation of the REST transcription factor and some of the neurological deficits seen in Down's syndrome. Experimental REST downregulation has been shown to trigger apoptosis, which could account for the striking and selective loss of neurons in the differentiated Down's syndrome cell preparations.
