Title: The Prahran (Melbourne) ATC study - 'before' data report
Abstract: This report documents the procedures and data for a field survey carried out at the City of Prahran, Melbourne for a period of two weeks beginning from 26th November to 8th December 1978. This survey was conducted as part of a joint ARRB ROSTA area traffic control study in Prahran, and provides the 'before' data for the evaluation of traffic control measures. The survey covered the grid network formed by three major east west and three north south routes within that city. Floating cars were used to measure journey times on specified routes, and manual and automatic vehicle counts were conducted at specified sites. Three peak periods corresponding to morning, lunch and evening peaks were surveyed for each work day within that period. This data will be used in subsequent analysis for the joint project. However it could also be of more general interest and a user's guide is therefore provided for its retrieval from the ARRB cyber 171 computer. This report also illustrates how the operating characteristic of the high street subarea can be obtained from such data collected by a linear regression of total travel time (veh-h/h) against travel demand (veh-km/h).
