Rousselot looks at the effect of the idealization of the norm in the shift to French by the South-Eastern bourgeoisie ("portalism"). This analysis must be tempered by saying that adapting the lexical items of Provençal to regional French can be explained by other mechanisms and this is also true of other processes (the "accent").
