Title: Biography, taste, and identity construction in the production and reception of some contemporary South African jazz
Abstract: Drawing on post-structuralist notions of identity as performative, this article describes the distinctive biographies and taste-preferences that jazz musicians and concertgoers on the jazz scenes of post-apartheid Durban and Johannesburg bring to their musical experiences. It relies strongly on interviews and personal experiences of jazz whether as composer, performer, or listener, in order to build an argument that through their engagement with contemporary South African jazz, these individuals sometimes affirm and sometimes contest their participation within a variety of micro- and macro-social narratives in a highly fluid and changeable social universe.
