Title: Beyond initial certification: the assessment and maintenance of competency in professions
Abstract: Professional competency is an issue of central concern to all professional fields and to the consumers of the services they provide. Wide-ranging views exist, however, as to how competency should be defined, maintained and regulated. In this paper, key issues related to competency evaluation and maintenance are described, and viable alternatives for enhancing the fidelity and adequacy of professional services are presented.
