Title: On “lifelong learning and the maintenance of certification”
Abstract: Advances in medical knowledge and imaging technologies have resulted in substantial growth in the field of radiology; this trend is expected to continue throughout the 21st century. Such change requires practicing radiologists to continue their radiology education long after the completion of residency, especially as new diagnostic technologies continue to arise and become quickly accepted into the mainstream of modern medicine. In this issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology, Dr. John Madewell emphasizes the professional commitment by radiologists to pursue lifelong learning and ties the topic of lifelong learning to a recent educational initiative, known as the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) initiative. Most importantly, Dr. Madewell connects the commitment to lifelong learning with the social contract between the medical profession and the society in which it serves. Certainly, the substance of our daily professional lives is deeply embedded in medical science and advanced technology. However, this article reminds us that the purpose of our collective work is to use our wisdom, knowledge, and skills to fulfill the principal social commitment of our profession: the promotion of the health and well-being of the individuals in our society.
