This program has led to the design and development of ...This paper presents the results of an advanced highpower multibeam active array program, conducted under the sponsorship of COMSAT World Systems. This program has led to the design and development of a flight-qualifiable, high-power, active phased array at Ku-band employing monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) and demonstrating independent multibeam operation. The array consists of 24 active radiating elements, each equipped with a 2-W amplifier and orthomode transducer (OMT) for dual polarization. The power amplifiers use a combination of MMIC andquasi-monolithic technology toachieve maximum DC-to-RF conversion efficiency and linearity. They are cooled by a liquid cooling loop that simulates heat pipes for space application. Multibeam operation is accomplished through the use of a unique beam forming matrix (BFM) that is capable of forming four simultaneous independently steerable beams. Beam steerability is provided through 5-bit MMIC digital phase shifters and associated logic circuitry integrated within the BFM.Read More
